Martina Rosaria O’Connell testimonial

“My music education journey began with the Galway’s at the humble age of nine. A poster in my local music school advertising Sir James’s 70th Birthday celebration, an open workshop and a masterclass in the National Concert Hall, Dublin. I nervously attended, not knowing what that day would entail, it was a big step outside the routine of weekly music lessons. And what a day it was, in hindsight perhaps one of those pinnacle moments which determined music was to become much more than just my hobby, but a lifelong companion. A flute choir performance of Brian Boru’s march ended the day’s activities of scales, playing different melodies, listening to a high standard of flute playing and of course, experiencing first-hand the vibrant and exhilarating tone of Sir James Galway.

A very brief conversation was had with Lady Jeanne at the end of the masterclass regarding applying for the Galway Flute Academy Festival held in Switzerland, and a month or two later I reached out to enquire, and she stayed so true to her word in guiding me on how to not only apply but also secure a sponsor to go towards my tuition. This genuine care and support has been an ongoing trend since then, and I didn’t know at the time just how influential having that advocacy would become.

The Galway’s inspired us throughout the turbulence and uncertainty of the pandemic by encouraging us to use the time to truly work on our craft and to be ready when the world resumed normality again. It was that message which created such a positive light and motivation. I am truly indebted to the support of the Galway Flute Academy over the years, for their constant belief in me as their student. I am excited to continue on my journey of learning knowing I have the support of the Academy and its community always by my side.”
